The Hаmmering Man by Jonathan Borofsky

This huge moving sculpture is situated in Seoul, near Gwanghwamun subway station, line 5. Hаmmering Man considers as the most famous Jonathan Borofsky’s art project, which includes the same sculptures in another world megalopolises, such as Frankfurt, Seattle, New York, Los-Angeles, Basel etc. Hammering Man in Seoul is the highest one (72 ft). It’s made from hollow-fabricated steel. You can see this sculpture near the Heungkuk Life Insurance building.

Artist considers the Hammering Man as a worker, which every of us is. ‘We all use our minds and our hands to create our world’, says Borofsky. That’s why the motorized hammering arm is slowly moving up to head and back down to another hand. But also Borofsky wants us to pay attention that there’s a heart in between head and arm.

I can say this sculpture is such a good symbol especially for Seoul, because Koreans are well-known as hardworkers. Hammering Man is an integrated portrait of every working citizien in this world, but it’s a hymn to him at the same time.

How to get there: Gwanghwamun/광화문 subway st., line 5, exit 6. Walk 5 min. to the National History Museum direction.
